My grandma has this butter cream icing recipe. Where it came from is a mystery, although she’d probably know even now if I could ask. It’s written in an old tattered notebook from when she took a baking class when she young. Written in perfect script on worn yellowed pages. We’ve been flipping open to that page every year that I can remember to make her butter cream icing.
We would use this recipe to mix up bright and fun colors for our annual holiday sugar cookies. The cookies are so light and fluffy, and are absolute perfection when topped with this butter flavored icing.
When I was younger, I’d sneak a broken reindeer cookie here and there. In doing so, I’d get a large spoonful of icing to top it with when backs were turned. At the end of the day I’d be covered head to toe in blue, yellow, green, and red icing. At that point, I’d go pop open a root beer and take a nap on the couch with the schnauzer. I slept easy those nights wrapped in a sugar haze.
This is what memories are made of. No matter how many times I’ve told my grandma that I love her, she will never know just how much those days baking with her meant to me. And how much I will always cherish this recipe in my heart.
